About the Data
Chicago's traffic crash data is sourced from the City of Chicago Open Data Portal and is maintained by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). Two datasets are available:
- Traffic Fatalities & Serious Injuries — records individual crash victims (cyclists, pedestrians, drivers, motorcyclists, passengers, and moped riders) involved in crashes resulting in fatalities or incapacitating injuries. Sourced from the Traffic Crashes – People dataset.
- Traffic Crashes — records all reported traffic crashes in Chicago, with details on crash type, primary contributory cause, injury counts, and location. Sourced from the Traffic Crashes – Crashes dataset.
Data is queried live via the Socrata Open Data API and reflects the most recent available records. Default views show the past two months.
